B arrington High School seeks a new varsity baseball skipper.
And a groundskeeper.
For more than 20 years, Kirby Smith has filled both roles. The Broncos' head baseball coach since 1977 and a member of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Smith is retiring his fungo bat and rake at the end of the upcoming season. He confirmed the news, which had been rumored for several months, last Thursday night at a rules meeting for players and parents in the BHS Student Center.
Smith cited two main reasons why he is calling it quits.
