An estimated 1,300 children died nationwide in 2001 as a result of child abuse or neglect. The first steps of understanding what child abuse is and how to identify possible victims will better facilitate this public incomprehension of the child abuse issue.
What exactly is child abuse? According to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, Title 42, Subchapter 67, Section 5106g, child abuse is "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm."
