Serving the needs, both physical and spiritual, of the community has been the goal of the YMCA since the organization was founded. Now, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA is embarking on a capital campaign to expand those services and reach even more people. The first Young Men's Christian Association was founded in 1844 in London by George Williams and likeminded individuals who were concerned about the quality of life in cities during the Industrial Revolution. The movement spread to the United States in 1851.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA promises to build "strong kids, strong families, strong communities."
