ELGIN -- Irv "Pappy" Rowe's hopes for receiving his medals for heroism in World War II were fading faster than some of his treasured military papers from that era when a powerful political leader stepped in: U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert. The Yorkville Republican and 14th District congressman went to bat for Rowe, using his political clout to cut through the red tape. In short order, the 88-year-old Elgin resident received the medals long overdue for service as a bombardier in a B-24 Liberator.
