On Oct. 13, Betty Davin celebrated living on the same block for 62 years. Born Nov. 5, 1920, in Chicago, Betty was raised in Hyde Park. Her dad, Edward, was a textbook salesman for Macmillan Publishing in the Catholic department, covering the Midwest territory. Her mother, the former Mary Olive Friend, stayed home to raise Betty and her brother, William.

Sometimes the whole family would accompany dad on his business trips. At age 4, Betty said she vividly remembers motoring to St. Louis in the brown Buick sedan company car that had wooden spoked wheels. All the windows were open and ...
