A new handbook will bridge the gap between teachers and their special needs students.
The Special Needs Handbook, 28 typewritten pages and an even longer appendix, will be distributed to teachers next week.
The new handbook, adopted this week by the School Board, is the combined work of one general education teacher from each Merrillville school, two special education teachers and a representative of the Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative.
Assistant Superintendent Michael Berta said the handbook covers a variety of special needs, including impaired vision, hearing or mobility and poor English language skills.
