The Indiana State Department of Health has targeted Lake County as one of the state's priority areas for HIV prevention because of the high numbers of those infected.
The quarterly report on HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases published by the ISDH shows Lake County with 548 AIDS cases reported since 1982 and 444 HIV cases reported since 1985.
It has the second highest number of reported infections in the state, surpassed only by Marion County.
