Dr. Walfred A. "Chuck" Nelson, described by many as the last of the old-style family doctors, died Wednesday morning of heart failure. He was 87.
"He was the last of the true doctors. One of the most dedicated and compassionate general practitioners that I have had the pleasure of working with," said Judy Ayres, Nelson's nurse for 31 years.
Ayres had a lifelong relationship with Dr. Nelson. He delivered her, and she started working for him, first as a receptionist, while attending Wirt High School.
