Monday marked the beginning of spring break, with nippy weather and a whole lot of nothing for Duneland children to do. Portage kids, on the other hand, had a day of sports tournaments, arts and crafts, pie-eating contests and the like at the Portage Boys and Girls Club. About 25 children stood outside the club Monday, waiting for it to open.

The Portage Boys and Girls Club opened the day after Christmas. To date, 1,200 children have joined. Daily, the facility averages 250 children, said Program Director Holly Dennis.

"It's quite a success here," she noted.
