MERRILLVILLE
The Merrillville Sanitary District's attempt to enter the sewer business has been thwarted by the state's highest court.
The Indiana Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of a lower court ruling that prevents the sanitary district from collecting sanitary sewer taxes.
The Town Council created the district in 1993 to gain, for the first time, some control of local sewers, which have always been provided by separate entities.
The sanitary district also was granted the responsibility to oversee trash collection and the town's recycling program.
