The Hobart Sanitary District is considering whether it should build its own sewage treatment plant to serve the growing south side of the city. The Hobart Sanitary District board and the Merrillville Conservancy District board discussed whether they can work together in serving the Ross Township area annexed by Hobart.

Stephan Truchan, Hobart city engineer and a member of the sanitary district board, later said that a treatment plant is one option for Hobart, which sends its sewage to the Gary Sanitary District for treatment.
