Back when all the rock bands wore flannel shirts and came from Seattle, Soundgarden got lumped into the "grunge" category. But in truth, despite singer Chris Cornell's considerable anguish and pain, the quartet has never sounded like Nirvana or Pearl Jam. Since the band formed in 1984, it has always had a Led Zeppelin obsession, playing heavy metal so loud and sludgy you'd sometimes swear they were a younger Metallica.
