Citing dramatic declines in yellow perch populations, Indiana announced Thursday that it is suspending commercial fishing of the species in its Lake Michigan waters.
Patrick R. Ralston, director of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, signed the emergency rule, which takes effect Jan. 1. Besides indefinitely banning commercial fishing, the rule reduces the daily sport fishing catch limit for yellow perch from 25 to 15.
Ralston said the actions were part of an effort by the four Lake Michigan border states to save the lake's remaining yellow perch population from extinction.
