Gary officials said they will save more than $200,000 in the purchase of 20 fully-equipped Ford Crown Victoria police squad cars by finding another dealer.
Earlier this month the board turned down a $26,000 per car bid by the only previous bidder, T.M Somers Fire Equipment Inc. of Griffith, a local agent for an Oklahoma company, saying the $524,480 price was too high, even if Gary taxpayers weren't paying for them.
The squad cars will be purchased jointly from a federal grant and money from U.S. Steel.
The board suffered some adverse reaction because of its action and the delay.
