In response to your Aug. 16 editorial regarding the suicide of a Lake County Jail inmate: The last suicide in the Lake County Jail occurred in 1988. Since then, over 65,000 inmates have been processed through our detention system. In that time there have been no successful suicide attempts.

Our officers are trained in the area of suicide detection, which unfortunately is not an exact science. Our officers are aware, however, when to refer an inmate to the proper mental health personnel to ensure that the inmate receives counseling immediately and that the necessary physical precautions are taken.
