A decline in the black infant mortality rate in Marion County shouldn't mean the end of improved prenatal care and education programs, officials say. The county recorded a black infant mortality rate of 14.8 per 1,000 last year, compared to 24.2 per 1,000 in 1987.

That year, the city had the highest black infant mortality rate among America's largest cities.

The Marion County Health and Hospital Corp. reports 56 black babies died in 1993, 23 fewer than in 1992.

There were 85 black infants born with low birth weight - less than 3.3 pounds - in 1993, 35 fewer than in 1992, Mayor Stephen Goldsmith said.
