NATURE
They're back - winged creatures of the night. And among them, the most notorious are bats.
As summer approaches, more and more bats will be seen fluttering through the night sky, perhaps reminiscient of old Bela Lugosi movies.
Any flying animal larger than a moth and seen or heard in the dark frightens most people. Just the mere mention of bats puts people on edge.
Eight species of bats reside here in Northwest Indiana, according to Ralph Grundel, the local research animal ecologist for the National Biological Survey.
