Imagine a creature with a face like E.T., four legs and a tail, and black skin covered with yellow blotches. Sounds like something from outer space, come to enslave the human race.

But this creature is so common that one may be living in your backyard. In fact, salamanders come in many sizes and shapes.

The many light blotches on a dark background give the eastern tiger salamander its name.

The tiger is one of three common "mole" salamanders in our area. Mole salamanders - like moles - spend most of their lives underground.
