Doppler radar remains the state's best defense against nature's violent tempests, even though it failed to detect a deadly tornado that struck West Lafayette in April, federal officials say.
"It's possible that it could happen again, but even at the infancy stage with Doppler radar we're still much better off than under conventional radar," Mike Looney, chief of meteorological services at the National Weather Service in Kansas City, Mo., said Wednesday.
