"How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" The subject of that popular tongue-twister, the woodchuck - or groundhog as some people call it - is a fairly common mammal of Northwest Indiana woodlands.

The woodchuck excavates an intricate burrow about 4 feet underground. The burrow may measure 40 feet or more. Four well-developed front toes and curved- claws aid the woodchuck digging.

It's difficult to find a woodchuck burrow, unless you have the misfortune to step in the entrance hole.
