Northern Indiana Public Service Co. announced Wednesday that it will conduct environmental tests in November for a new fuel mix at its Schahfer Generating Station.
NIPSCO officials said the utility will test burn a coal tar and soil mix in cooperation with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The material is coming from the former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) in Fort Wayne.
According to a statement from NIPSCO, before natural gas was available, utilities manufactured gas using coal, coke and steam. As natural gas became available in the 1940s, MGP dismantled its operation.
