It will be next month before the Merrillville Sanitary District learns how much tax money it will be allowed to collect from town residents in 1995. A hearing on the district's proposed $418,000 budget was conducted Thursday by Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners field representative Dave Stephani.

A first-ever sanitary tax rate of 22 cents per $100 of assessed property value would fund the proposed budget.

Last year, the state board rejected the district's entire budget and tax request due to litigation challenging
