If former St. John Police Chief Bernard Johnsen is anything, he's a fighter. A disciplined police officer and martial arts expert, Johnsen readily acknowledges he didn't accept the chief's job in 1989 to win any popularity contests.

Johnsen, a 16-year veteran of the force who was demoted by the Police Commission from the chief's spot and returned to the rank of captain last week, said as chief he continually tried to make the department more professional.
