In an effort to gather local input on prenatal and infant health care needs, the Northwest Indiana Health Department Cooperative is sponsoring public forums in Gary and Hammond this week. The cooperative, organized last year by health officials in Gary, Hammond, East Chicago and Lake Station, was formed to reduce the area's high infant mortality rate.

Currently, Gary's rate is 16.94 per 1,000 live births, followed by East Chicago at 16.46, Hammond at 14.95 and Lake Station at 13.32.
