In response to a proposed Merrillville sanitary district, and to protect portions of Ross Township it has hopes of annexing, Hobart has decided to establish its own sanitary district.
Mayor Robert Malizzo called Merrillville's plan vindictive, and said if two pending annexation attempts of Ross Township are ruled valid by the courts, he does not want another municipality having jurisdiction over those areas.
"We felt Merrillville was not dealing in the best interests of the entire area," Malizzo said.
