Even as America goes to war again, its leaders still are trying to deal with the side effects of the last one, which ended in 1973. Some relief finally may be in sight.
A new danger to health emerged from the war that was fought in the jungles of Vietnam - exposure to Agent Orange, a defoliant sprayed from the air by the U.S. military to clear out the dense vegetation that hampered war maneuvers there. Agent Orange has been linked to the later development of a variety of ailments, including cancers, among Vietnam veterans and to birth defects in their offspring.
