Shirley A. Clark had won enough trust during her 20-year career at the Lake County treasurer's office to rise to the position of head cashier.
Lake County Prosecutor Jon E. DeGuilio announced Wednesday a county grand jury indicted the 46-year-old Gary woman on charges she used that position to steal more than $100,000 in tax money flowing through the office between 1989 and 1990.
Police arrested Clark early Wednesday as part of a nine-month investigation into the disappearance of more than $420,000 from the treasurer's office in the county courthouse at 4th and Broadway, Gary.
