Lou Melchiorre gained 153 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 15, 20 and 15 yards to lead Ferris State past Valparaiso University 28-9 Saturday in Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference action at Big Rapids, Mich. The Crusaders (0-5-1) scored on a 19-yard pass from Wayne Collins (Lake Central) to Robert Gee and on a 26-yard field goal by Gil Gutierrez. Freshman Kosi Pickett (Gary West) ran 11 times for 48 yards and caught three passes for 33 yards.

Defensively, Scott Pectu (Valparaiso) had 16 tackles and Jason Evans (Highland) had 12 tackles, including two for losses and a sack.
