A Dyer store owner was recuperating Friday after escaping from a fire that destroyed his store and could have claimed his life.
Police did not disclose the identity of the store owner, who told police he was beaten, robbed and tied to a chair by two men who then set the store afire.
The fire at the Texas Western Store, 229 Joliet St., was discovered at 4:05 p.m. Thursday.
Response was almost immediate, Dyer police detective David Walker said, because the store is across the street from the Dyer municipal building and the fire department.
The store was filled with smoke by the time firefighters arrived, Walker said.
