Lisa Herbert said she knew Saturday morning that Merrillville would finally capture its own girls' basketball sectional. But for everyone else in attendance Saturday night, the outcome wasn't known until the final seconds.

Merrillville, boosted by Herbert's three-point play with 31 seconds remaining, downed Calumet, 41-40. It was the Pirates' first sectional title since 1981.

Merrillville (15-6) will meet Gary Roosevelt at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the second game of the Calumet Regional.
