More than one million Americans will be diagnosed as having cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society. My ex-husband didn't feel like a statistic to me, but he was. His was one of the 494,000 cancer deaths predicted for 1989.
When he was first told that he had lung cancer in June of 1986, his physicians explained the plan of chemotherapy and radiation they recommended to treat his disease. They very gently told us that they didn't talk in terms of "curing" lung cancer, the most they could hope to do was extend life.
