Virginia Gov. Gerald Baliles was struck, he recalled Friday, by the chicken feet he saw frequently at meals during a trade mission to the Far East.
When he got home, he said, he asked Virginia chicken producers what they did with the feet of chickens they process.
"They laughed," Baliles recounted, "and said they're cut off and thrown away. I said, 'I think we've found a new market.' "
As a result, Baliles told fellow governors Friday, Virginia now exports 40 tons of chicken feet and related products every month to foreign markets where they are more valued.
