Article: THEN AND NOW EVOLUTION OF THE BLACK POLITICAL MOVEMENT

PHOTO - 5 It was in Gary in 1972 that the black political movement first developed an organized agenda. More than 8,000 people jammed the gymnasium at West Side High School (top photo) for the first National Black Political Convention. Less than 1,000 attended the African American Summit '89 in New Orleans in April. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who played a prominent role at both, changed a lot between the 1972 gathering (above left) and the 1989 session (left) - both in wardrobe and philosophy. Richard Hatcher (above right in 1972), who convened both conventions, looks and thinks much the same now as then. Louis Farrakhan speaks at the 1989 summit. (AP photo) (AP Photo)
