Guests at Porter County motels and inns will begin paying a higher tax on their room rate starting July 1.
The Porter County Council voted 6-1 Tuesday to raise the tax from 3 percent to 5 percent, the maximum allowed under state law. Councilwoman Ruth Ann McWhorter, R-Valparaiso, cast the dissenting vote.
County tourism director John Bowman said additional money is needed to keep pace with the growth Porter County is experiencing.
Two areas of the county's tourism industry that need to be promoted are attracting bus tours and conventions to the county, Bowman said.
