Representatives of three areas served by the Gary Sanitary District said they will not automatically agree to the Sanitary District's imminent request for a user charge rate increase for sewer service. Rates for sewer service are based on water consumption.

Paul Volk, board chairman for the Merrillville Conservancy District, and the mayors of Hobart and Lake Station said the Sanitary District will have to show compelling evidence why an increase is necessary.

In some instances, the proposed increases exceed 300 percent.
