Vanderburgh County Commissioners and the Evansville City Council have agreed to invite the state to build a $54 million state prison despite fierce opposition in the community.
Les Shively, attorney for Citizens Against the Prison, said a state prison would not be the kind of economic development the county needs.
"What Vanderburgh County needs is meaningful economic development private sector, long-term jobs with good wages and increased (property) tax revenues. This proposal fulfills none of those criteria," he told the commissioners.
