A Lake Superior Court jury rejected the insanity plea of a Gary man Thursday night and convicted him of murdering four members of a Hammond family.
Jurors deliberated three hours before finding Dennis Ray Roark, 26, of Gary guilty of fatally stabbing Betty Waggoner, 61; Mary Waggoner, 19; Dennis Waggoner, 20 months; and Elizabeth Waggoner, 4 months.
The seven women and five men in the jury box wouldn't excuse the crime as the product of a deranged mind, but will return to court today to debate whether his emotional and mental problems diminish his guilt enough to spare him from the electric chair.
