Lake County Councilman Andrew Smith, D-Gary, whose two terms in county government were sometimes marked by clashes with his colleagues over his opposition to questionable deals and county contracts, died Tuesday night at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
Smith, 60, was the founder and owner of Andrew Smith Funeral Home, 934 E. 21st Ave.
A former council president, Smith had served on the County Council since 1983. Smith defeated the council president, Rolland Beckham, in the May 1982 primary. A recount found Smith beating Beckham by 70 votes.
