No one would mind if Manuel Galvan's chest swells a bit with pride.
Galvan, City Hall reporter for the Chicago Tribune since 1984, was named to the Tribune's powerful editorial board last month. Galvan, Hispanic, and columnist Clarence Page, black, are the minority members of the policy-setting board.
Its members are selected by the editor when a vacancy occurs. Galvan replaced Dan Tucker who retired after 15 years.
"We meet every morning to talk things out - to reach a consensus on editorial subjects and viewpoints for the next day," he said. "The death penalty is the only issue on which we have been unable to agree."
