The state of Indiana has turned down requests from hundreds of companies to supervise voluntary cleanup of industrial waste sites, it was revealed here Wednesday. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management reported it was unable to handle the requests because of a tight budget.

As a result, hundreds of companies were unable to get the state department to give them clearance to clean disposal sites, said William Beranek Jr., environmental director for the Indianapolis Center for Advanced Research.
