Attorneys for the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad began negotiations Friday to settle a dispute with the Missouri Pacific Railroad that has held up the paychecks of some South Shore employees.
There was some concern by South Shore officials that if the payroll problem continued, union employees might strike as early as next week.
But company officials Friday received assurances from all six unions - representing about 225 South Shore engineers, conductors, brakemen, dispatchers and clerical workers - that a strike was not imminent.
