Northwest Indiana judges, lawyers and court personnel gave almost unanimous approval to proposed changes in the state's court system Friday, although there was considerable disagreement on whether judges in Lake County should be elected or selected on a merit basis. The Indiana Judicial Commission on Trial Courts conducted a 2 1/2-hour hearing here to receive opinion on proposed changes and field suggestions on other ideas.

State Sen. Edward Pease, R-Brazil, who conducted the hearing, said the commission must make its recommendation to the Indiana General Assembly by Oct. 1.
