Recent History: This region, which includes the Mountain West and much of the Farmbelt, has grown increasingly conservative and Republican. Many there mistrust the national Democratic party, which they see as dominated by urban, liberal and black interests.
Latest Line: Eight years of what is seen as inattention by the Reagan administration and a disastrous summer drought has left this region restive and Bush is all wrong here culturally. But still, if Dukakis ...
