It's always a shock. Thump!

It's not a hard sound like someone has hit the window with stone, rather a muffled noise that means only one thing. A bird has just struck your window.

You then go outside to check, hoping what you heard was a glancing blow - no harm. Sometimes you'll find a few feathers adhering to the window, others a stunned bird on the ground and worst, a fatality
