An electric space heater caused the fire that killed two young children Oct. 30 as they slept in the bedroom of an apartment here, a Valparaiso Fire Department spokesman said Wednesday. Chief Inspector Sam Moser said the children were sleeping on a mattress placed on the floor, and that the space heater was about an inch away.He said the children may have kicked their blankets onto the heater.

The victims, April Witten, 2, and her brother, Jonathan, 9 months old, were found dead in the back bedroom of the three-bedroom apartment at 355 Locust St.
