Superior Court Judge Bryce Billings announced Thursday that his successor probably will be chosen from a list of five Republicans who have expressed interest in the job.
Billings, 63, formally announced Thursday that he would retire from the bench Dec. 31.
He said he and his wife of 35 years, Edna Ruth, plan to spend the winter in Arizona near their son Jim, a loan officer with the Valley National Bank in Scottsdale. Their daughter, Susan, was killed 14 years ago "a month short of her 18th birthday" by "a couple of kids showing off" in a car, he said. She was a pedestrian when she was struck.
