President Reagan proclaimed Thursday night that "extraordinary things have happened" to improve U.S.-Soviet relations since Mikhail Gorbachev took power in 1985 and even raised the hope that some day the two superpowers might become allies again. In a farewell news conference touched with reflections on his eight-year presidency, Reagan spoke warmly of the Soviet leader and said he believes Gorbachev wants to remake the Soviet Union into a less threatening country.
