Legislation to make local measured service optional for residential customers died in the legislature Wednesday and wasn't revived in the special session Thursday. House-Senate conferees on House Bill 1885 could not agree to compromise language on the bill before the regular legislative session ended at midnight Wednesday.

State Rep. Jeffrey Espich, R-Uniondale, conference committee chairman, said: "The bill did nothing but encourage the adoption of LMS (local measured service). There were no safeguards for the public at all."
