An estimated 200 gallons of spent sulfuric acid were spilled during an accident at the Stauffer Chemical Co. Friday evening, Hammond officials said. Stauffer, 2000 Michigan St., could face a fine of up to $2,500 for failing to report the spill in a timely manner, city officials said. A city ordinance that took effect Jan. 27 specifies that the Fire Department is to be notified within five minutes of any leak, spill, or other release of hazardous or toxic substances.
