A lawyer for condemned murderer Paula R. Cooper is asking for a new judge to hear evidence why the 17-year-old former Gary girl should be spared from the death penalty.
Appellate Public Defender William L. Touchette has filed a motion asking Pro-Tem Lake Superior Court Judge W. Henry Walker Sr. to remove himself from the case because he represented one of Cooper's co-defendants.
Walker automatically took over the case last week when he was named interim judge, replacing the late Judge James C. Kimbrough who died April 30 in a traffic accident in Gary.
Kimbrough sentenced Cooper to death last year after she pleaded guilty ...
